Compare Dutch city routes for a diploma apostille

Compare the Apostille Assist guides for Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. For many Dutch diplomas and transcripts, DUO legalisation comes before the court apostille stage.

The city is only one part of the diploma route

A Dutch diploma is not usually taken directly to a court. For many recognised Dutch education documents, DUO first verifies and legalises the original document. Depending on the route, this legalisation may be arranged in Groningen, Amsterdam or Rotterdam. The apostille follows afterwards.

The city guide explains the local court and submission route. It does not replace the document check that determines whether the diploma is ready for that stage.

How many Dutch courts issue apostilles?

Apostilles are issued by Dutch courts throughout the Netherlands. For education documents, the most important question is usually not which court is closest, but whether the diploma has already completed any required DUO legalisation steps.

Document readiness often matters more than location. Once DUO legalisation has been completed where required, different courts can usually handle the apostille stage.

Why Groningen, Amsterdam and Rotterdam can matter

Groningen is closely associated with DUO, but it is not the only place where the legalisation step can be arranged. Depending on the document and available appointment route, DUO legalisation may also be completed in Amsterdam or Rotterdam before the court apostille stage.

How the Dutch diploma route normally works

The receiving organisation determines the complete route, but these steps are commonly relevant.

Step 1

Check the original diploma

Confirm that the document is original, complete, signed and issued for a recognised Dutch programme.

Step 2

DUO legalisation first

DUO commonly verifies and legalises eligible Dutch diplomas and transcripts before the apostille stage.

Step 3

Court apostille and return

Once the document is ready, an existing city route can be used for apostille submission and return delivery.

When the chosen city makes little difference

Once the diploma has been properly prepared, the difference between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht is often practical rather than legal.

Processing routes, travel considerations and document handling may vary, but the apostille itself follows the same Dutch system.

Self-submission or a document service?

Some clients arrange the route themselves, while others prefer one document service for DUO, apostille submission and international return handling.

Frequently asked questions

Which cities are included?

The apostille guides cover Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. For the earlier DUO legalisation step, Amsterdam and Rotterdam may also be relevant alongside Groningen.

Why is Groningen not a city button?

The buttons above lead to city-specific apostille guides. Groningen is mainly relevant because of DUO.

Can a diploma go directly to court?

Many Dutch diplomas and transcripts first require DUO legalisation before the court apostille stage.

Does the city determine eligibility?

No. The document, signature, DUO requirements and destination-country instructions determine the route.

Can Apostille Assist handle the document route?

Where suitable, Apostille Assist can handle the agreed DUO, court, translation and delivery steps as one document service.

Should I simply choose the nearest city?

Not automatically. Document readiness and practical handling matter more than distance alone.
