What is a Sworn Translation?

A sworn translation (beëdigde vertaling) in the Netherlands is produced by a translator who has sworn an oath before a Dutch District Court (Rechtbank) and is registered in the official Register of Sworn Translators (WBTV).

✓Bound to the source document with an official stamp, signature, and declaration
✓Legally recognised by courts, government ministries, universities, and embassies
✓Required for vital statistics, diplomas, criminal records (VOG), and court deeds

Crucial Legalisation Order

A common pitfall is placing an apostille on the wrong document. Some foreign authorities require an apostille on the original Dutch document *before* translation, while others require an apostille on the *sworn translator's signature* at the District Court.

✓Apostille on the original Dutch document first (e.g., for Spain, UAE, or US)
✓Apostille on the sworn translator's signature via the Dutch District Court
✓Our Route Check confirms the exact sequence before translation starts

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a standard and a sworn translation?

A standard translation is for informational use. A sworn translation is executed by a court-appointed translator, stamped, signed, and legally valid for official government, court, or university submission.

Do I need to send the original physical document?

In many cases, a high-resolution PDF scan is sufficient for the sworn translator. However, if an apostille must be attached to the original paper document first, physical handling is required.

Can a sworn translator legalise their own translation?

No. A sworn translator signs and stamps the document. If foreign authorities require an apostille or legalisation on the translation, the signature of the sworn translator must be legalised by a Dutch District Court.

Which languages do you support?

We work with Dutch court-registered sworn translators for English, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Portuguese, Chinese, Italian, Russian, and many other languages.

Is a sworn translation from the Netherlands accepted worldwide?

Yes, provided it is properly legalised (with an apostille or embassy stamp) according to the destination country's regulations and treaties.

How long does a sworn translation take?

Standard turnaround is typically 2 to 4 business days, depending on document length and language pair. Urgent processing is available upon request.
