Registering a marriage abroad
using Dutch documents.
Was your marriage recorded in the Netherlands and must it now be entered in a foreign civil register? Apostille Assist helps identify the accepted Dutch marriage record and coordinates the agreed request, apostille or legalisation, certified translation and international delivery route.
Choose the right level of support
Use apostille submission when the correct Dutch marriage certificate is already available and the apostille requirement is confirmed. Choose document coordination when the certificate must still be requested or the foreign registration route, translation or delivery requirements are unclear.

- Coordination of the agreed Dutch-side document route

Choose the certificate the registry accepts
A civil registry may distinguish between an official copy, an extract and an international or multilingual version.
Check the destination route before ordering
The country and receiving authority determine whether the Dutch record needs no authentication, an apostille or a longer legalisation route.
From Dutch marriage record to foreign registration
Start with the foreign registry’s exact checklist before requesting a certificate or commissioning a translation.
Share the instruction
Send the registry, embassy or authority checklist and destination country.
Select the record
Confirm the municipality, certificate type, issue date and required annotations.
Complete authentication
Arrange the agreed EU, apostille or other legalisation route.
Translate and submit
Coordinate certified translation and tracked delivery in the accepted order.
It authenticates the relevant Dutch signature or official capacity. The foreign authority still decides whether the marriage and document set meet its registration and recognition rules.

Frequently asked questions
Which Dutch marriage document should I submit abroad?
The foreign registry must confirm whether it needs an official copy, extract or international or multilingual version and whether later annotations must appear.
Where can I request the Dutch marriage certificate?
A civil-status extract or official copy is generally requested from the municipality where the marriage record was drawn up. A Dutch national living abroad can still apply to that municipality.
Does a Dutch marriage certificate always need an apostille?
No. The destination and receiving authority determine whether an EU exemption, apostille or another legalisation route applies.
Can a multilingual certificate replace certified translation?
It may reduce or remove a translation request in some procedures, especially with an accepted EU multilingual standard form, but the receiving authority must confirm this.
Does the certificate have to be recently issued?
Some foreign registries impose their own issue-date limit. Confirm the accepted age before requesting and legalising the document.
Does an apostille guarantee registration abroad?
No. An apostille authenticates the relevant Dutch signature or capacity. The foreign authority makes the final registration and recognition decision.
