How to get a Dutch marriage certificate apostilled.

Need proof of a marriage registered in the Netherlands for use overseas? I can help obtain the appropriate marriage certificate, arrange a court apostille where required, coordinate a sworn translation and organise delivery to your country.

Start with the right record

A marriage certificate is not always the same as a marriage extract.

The document you need depends on what the receiving authority wants to verify. A Dutch marriage certificate records a marriage registered with the civil registry, while a municipal extract may serve a different purpose.

Before arranging an apostille, I check where the marriage was registered and whether the receiving authority requests a certified copy, an international or multilingual extract, or another form of evidence. Choosing the wrong document can mean delays and repeat applications.

Apostille Assist is an independent, paid document coordination service, not a municipality or a court. I coordinate the agreed steps on your behalf.

Document options

Which marriage document do you need?

The right version depends on the destination and the institution requesting proof of marriage.

When required
My coordination process

From marriage record to international delivery.

I handle the agreed Dutch-side steps and keep you informed throughout the process.

1

Check the destination requirements

Tell me where the certificate will be used and what the receiving authority has requested. I review the appropriate document format and authentication route.

2

Arrange the Dutch marriage certificate

I determine the relevant municipality and a workable application route. Some requests can be handled online, while others require identification or an original authorisation.

3

Coordinate apostille authentication

When required and applicable, I submit the eligible Dutch certificate for a court apostille.

4

Arrange translation if needed

I coordinate a sworn translation where requested, including a separate apostille if the receiving authority requires one.

5

Provide scans and dispatch originals

Where agreed, I send completion scans and arrange tracked international courier delivery of the physical documents.

Important distinctions

Not every country requires the same formalities.

An apostille is often useful, but it is not automatically required for every foreign use of a Dutch marriage certificate.

European UnionUnder EU rules, certain public documents, including marriage documents, can circulate between EU member states without an apostille. Translation rules and multilingual standard forms may also apply.
Hague Convention countriesAn apostille may be requested to authenticate a Dutch certificate for use in another participating country. The receiving authority determines which documents it accepts.
Non-Hague destinationsSome destinations require consular legalisation rather than an apostille. I review the route before recommending submission.
Marriage registered abroadA marriage that took place outside the Netherlands may require documents from the foreign issuing authority, even if it has also been registered in Dutch records.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Can I obtain a Dutch marriage certificate while living abroad?

Often yes. The application route depends on the municipality where the marriage was registered and the evidence it requires. I can review the available options and coordinate an application where possible.

Do I need DigiD to request a marriage certificate?

Not always. DigiD can simplify some municipal applications, but other routes may be available, including an authorised representative or written request. Requirements differ by municipality.

Does a Dutch marriage certificate always need an apostille?

No. The answer depends on the destination and the receiving authority. EU rules may remove the apostille requirement for certain documents used within the EU, while other countries may request an apostille or consular legalisation.

Can you arrange a sworn translation as well?

Yes. I can coordinate a sworn translation and, where requested, authentication of the translation itself. The receiving authority should confirm the required language and format.

What if we married outside the Netherlands?

The original foreign marriage certificate is generally issued by the authority where the marriage took place. Dutch registration does not necessarily replace that original record. I can review which Dutch document, if any, is suitable for your purpose.

Can you send the documents internationally?

Yes. Once the agreed steps are complete, I can provide scans where appropriate and arrange tracked international delivery of the originals.
