Proof of Address from the Netherlands | Apostille Assist

Dutch proof of address

Dutch proof of address needed abroad?

A foreign bank, immigration authority, employer or compliance department may ask for proof of your Dutch address. Depending on the request, a BRP extract, bank statement or municipality document may be suitable. Apostille Assist helps identify the document route and coordinate apostille, translation and international delivery where possible.

Which Dutch document can prove your address?

A recent BRP extract issued by a Dutch municipality is often the strongest official option because it can show your registered address and personal details. However, the receiving organisation may instead accept a bank statement, utility document or another municipality declaration.

These documents are not interchangeable. Before ordering anything, check the required issue date, address wording, document language and whether the recipient requires an apostille or translation.

Not sure which Dutch address document will be accepted?

Share the foreign instructions and purpose of use. I will review which Dutch document and international preparation route are likely to be relevant.

BRP extract, bank statement or municipality declaration?

The best document depends on the wording used by the foreign recipient.

Official register document

BRP extract

Issued by a Dutch municipality and commonly used as official evidence of a registered address. The extract must contain the details required by the receiving organisation.

Private supporting document

Bank statement

A bank statement can be accepted for compliance or account-opening procedures, but it is not a municipality record and does not usually receive a direct apostille.

Recipient-specific option

Municipality declaration

A foreign authority may request a specific municipality statement or extract. Availability, wording and apostille suitability depend on what the municipality can issue.

Apostille for Dutch proof of address

A municipality-issued BRP extract or declaration may be suitable for an apostille when it contains the required official signature or authentication. A bank statement is a private document and normally cannot receive a direct apostille in the same way.

✓Check the document type before requesting an apostille.
✓A scan or self-printed copy is not automatically suitable.
✓Some countries require legalisation instead of an apostille.

Translation of the address document

Translation is a separate step. If the receiving organisation does not accept Dutch, it may require a sworn translation or an internationally formatted municipality extract.

✓Check which language the foreign recipient accepts.
✓Ask whether a sworn or certified translation is required.
✓Confirm whether the apostille must also be translated.

Need the document while living abroad?

If you no longer live in the Netherlands, the available BRP or RNI document depends on your registration history and the municipality or authority holding your details. Apostille Assist can review the request and coordinate the agreed Dutch-side steps where possible.

Frequently asked questions

Is a BRP extract proof of address?

Often yes. A BRP extract can show your officially registered address, but the exact details included must match the receiving organisation’s requirements.

Can a Dutch bank statement be apostilled?

A bank statement is a private document and does not normally receive a direct apostille. A different certification route may be required if the recipient insists on authentication.

Can a BRP extract receive an apostille?

It may be possible when the municipality document is issued in a form suitable for apostille. The exact document should be checked before submission.

Can Dutch proof of address be arranged from abroad?

Many steps can be coordinated remotely. The available document depends on your Dutch registration and the requirements of the issuing municipality or authority.
