Birth certificate Amsterdam
for use abroad.
Was the birth registered in Amsterdam and do you need the certificate for a foreign authority? Apostille Assist can help coordinate the Amsterdam request, legalisation, translation and international delivery route.
Choose the right level of support
Use apostille submission when a suitable Amsterdam birth certificate is already available. Choose document coordination when the certificate still has to be requested or the foreign route contains several steps.
Apostille Submission
For a suitable, recently issued Amsterdam birth certificate when the apostille requirement is already clear.
- Practical submission to obtain the Dutch apostille
- For an available and suitable original municipal certificate
- WhatsApp updates during the process
Document Coordination
For an Amsterdam request from abroad or a route involving legalisation, translation and international delivery.
- Review of the recipient, destination and required certificate version
- Coordination of the agreed Amsterdam-side document route
- Options for apostille, translation and tracked delivery
The service fee covers Apostille Assist handling and coordination. External charges depend on the selected route and are confirmed before work begins.
When Amsterdam is the correct municipality
The Municipality of Amsterdam can issue the certificate only when the birth was registered in Amsterdam. Your current address or nationality does not determine which municipality holds the record.
Amsterdam registration
The birth must have taken place and been registered in the Municipality of Amsterdam. A birth elsewhere normally belongs to that other municipality.
Who may request it?
Amsterdam states that the applicant must be at least 12 and may request a certificate for themselves, their child or their parent.
Applying for another person
An authorised person can apply at a City Office with the required authorisation form and identity documents.
Select the municipal version accepted by the recipient
The Municipality of Amsterdam issues official certificates directly. Depending on the destination country and foreign receiving authority, the document may still require an apostille, legalisation or a sworn translation.
Official municipal copy
The standard, full birth certificate directly issued by the municipality containing all officially recorded birth details.
International extract
A shortened, multilingual version issued by the municipality to facilitate international use within participating countries.
Amsterdam request methods and current local details
The municipality offers several application routes. Processing times can change, so official Amsterdam channels are checked before submission.
Online
Amsterdam allows an online request and states that one certificate can be requested per application.
City Office or authorised person
A personal application can be made at a City Office. An authorised person needs the authorisation form and the required identity documents.
Written request
A request by post is possible only for a certificate from the previous calendar year or earlier and must include the required details, purpose, signature and ID copy.
From Amsterdam registration to use abroad
Start with the receiving authority’s exact instruction. Do not order, apostille and translate every possible version at once.
Check the foreign request
Confirm the required version, issue date, language, apostille or legalisation and delivery method.
Request the correct certificate
Use the Amsterdam route that fits your eligibility, location and available identification or authorisation.
Complete authentication
Arrange an apostille or legalisation only if the destination and recipient require it.
Translate and deliver
Complete any sworn translation in the correct order and arrange tracked international delivery.
For certain public documents presented between EU member states, the EU Public Documents Regulation removes the apostille requirement. The receiving authority and intended use still determine the applicable route.
Why use Apostille Assist for this route?
The service is useful when the municipal request is only one part of a wider international document process.
One coordinated route
The Amsterdam request, legalisation, translation and delivery can be planned in the correct order.
Support while abroad
Practical handling is available when you cannot travel to Amsterdam or receive the document conveniently.
Recipient-led review
The route is based on the foreign authority’s wording instead of assuming that every birth certificate needs the same treatment.
Information that helps clarify your route
These details are usually enough for an initial review.

Full name at birth, date of birth and confirmation that the birth was registered in Amsterdam.
Foreign requirement
The recipient’s email, checklist or portal wording, including document age and language requirements.
Destination and deadline
Country, receiving authority, purpose, deadline and preferred delivery address.

Frequently asked questions
Can Amsterdam issue my birth certificate if I was born elsewhere?
Normally no. The certificate is requested from the municipality where the birth was registered. Amsterdam is the correct authority only for an Amsterdam registration.
Can I apply while living abroad?
An online or written route may be available, or an authorised person can apply at a City Office. The suitable option depends on your documents and circumstances.
What is the difference between an official municipal copy and an international extract?
An official municipal copy contains all recorded birth details. An international extract is a shortened, multilingual document. The foreign recipient should confirm which version it accepts.
Does an Amsterdam birth certificate always need an apostille?
No. The destination, intended use and receiving authority determine whether an apostille, EU exemption or another legalisation route applies.
How long does the Amsterdam request take?
Amsterdam currently indicates about 3 weeks for online and City Office requests and about 4 weeks for postal requests. Additional apostille, translation and delivery steps take extra time.
